"My dad works in the smelter"

Grade 12

The day I heard about it was at school. And we were talking about it in class. People were like, ‘I hear Vale’s laying off 500 workers,’ and, ‘Oh, my dad works at smelter.’ We didn’t have all the details so we were kind of panicking because we didn’t know what that meant. So I went home and I called my dad.

My dad’s been working at Vale for about 23 years so far. So in four more years’ time he’ll be about three years away from retirement, so he’ll be pretty close. But it all depends if Vale stays true to their word with not laying people off because he’ll be close to retirement but not close enough to get an early retirement package. The aim is to get 30 years, unless he gets a package, which we don’t know if they’d even do. It’s an iffy position, really.

My mom’s a teacher and she’s been teaching for quite a while and she’s at the point where she could retire now if she wanted because she’s had a fair amount of years, but she’s still working right now. So I think she’ll keep doing that for a while because of what’s happening.

The latest 'crisis' happening up in Thompson involving the former INCO has been like a repeating volcano eruption (or Red River flood for that matter...!). While I can still identify with some of the collective angst that the folks up in Thompson are likely experiencing, my own family made the (then unpopular, too!) decision/sacrifice to leave Thompson in the mid-late 70's, becoming successfully self-employed in the process & still being able to raise a young family of 6 in the years that have followed

This before there was ever computers/laptops, cell phones, the internet/websites, muchmusic, Ipods, Face book/twitter, free-trade, carbon-fibre composites, mandatory passports/barcodes, etc--beginning to get the message...? Your generation has a lot of potential to be able to outgrow our generation's reliance on the INCO's out there; have the courage/vision to do so much more than wasting the energy ranting & raving about the greedy idiots who won't have your morale courage to truly achieve a better life, & set your own course in life...regrettably, folks like Vale are too prevalent out there...

Perhaps within your lifetime you & others will make the Thompson, MB's, out there evolve to something better than just re-hashing generation-old issues/wounds that those of us during our lifetime lacked the vision to do so, or moved on to greener & greater pastures--they're out there. I've been up in the NWT twice since my Thompson days & I know first-hand there can be a vision to be had here, too...

...and 'Go for it'--that was the theme delivered by our high school valedictorian.
